The island republic of Malta is a rare combination of beautiful rocky coast and pocket beaches, delicious nature values, ancient archeological sites (at least as old as Egypt’s pyramids) and a long maritime history due to its strategic location in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea.
The government’s decision to develop the island of Gozo to an international example of sustainable tourism is just one of the elements that make this country very interesting. Not in the least because of its problems in hunting, trapping and environment.
It is fascinating to be part of the growing public awareness in the quality of life, the quality of the environment and of the maritime ecosystems. The connection with the Mediterranean ecosystem is obvious: there are quite some figurines and paintings of dolphins to admire in old villas and palaces in Malta.
EUCC’s QualityCoast Award Programme, the Blue Flag Programme and the Dolphin Fund are just some of EUCC’s network projects available for further implementation of Malta’s sustainable development strategy.
